Gross motor skills are abilities that let us do tasks that involve large muscles in our torso, legs, and arms. They involve whole-body movements.
Ever wondered what are the gross motor skills? And why it’s so important for your child’s development?
Children rely on gross motor skills for activities at school, at home, and in their everyday lives.
Gross motor abilities also form the basis for fine motor skills and relate to body awareness, reaction speed, balance and strength.
Gross motor skills allow doing whole-body movements like sitting, walking, running, lifting, jumping, etc.
If a child struggles with gross motor skills, they might be late in reaching developmental milestones (sit, crawl, walk, run and hop), might appear clumsy, and less skillful than their peers in sports, might tire frequently with physical activity, or even fail to perform movements safely (e.g., climbing).
